Spurs fans have been responding to comments made by Toby Alderweireld, which appear to suggest his future may be away from North London.

There have been reports that the Belgian has asked Tottenham to leave this summer, and quotes from an interview with Sport/Voetbalmagazine (as per Sport Witness) were shared by The Spurs Web – leading to a reaction from supporters.

Alderweireld claims he wants to be settled in Belgium by 2023 for family reasons as he wants his children to have a ‘normal childhood in Belgium‘.

Spurs fans in the replies believe that it is a big indication that Alderweireld will be leaving north London in the near future…

“Putting aside the bf at 5 comment, it’s easy to forget these players have families like we do. It’s understandable he’d want his kids to grow up in his home nation so him asking to leave definitely makes more sense now. I hope he gets a move even though I’d love him to stay.”

“Perfectly reasonable, not sure why anyone would want to live in Belgium saying that.”

Judging by the reactions, Alderweireld’s situation now seems clearer to Spurs fans, as the quotes seem to suggest that his reasoning behind wanting to leave is for family reasons.

Alderweireld has spent six years at Spurs, having joined the club in 2015 from Atletico Madrid. The 30-year-old has made 236 appearances for Spurs since his arrival in north London and has played in 200 Premier League fixtures during his time in England, having also played for Southampton during a loan move in the 2014/15 season.

The Belgian has two years left on his Spurs deal and it remains to be seen whether the club will cash in on him this summer or he’ll see out his contract at the club.
