Noted transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Tottenham Hotspur and their chase for Takehiro Tomiyasu.

A report last week from The Athletic claimed that Tottenham Hotspur and Tomiyasu’s current club Bologna were ‘finalising the terms of the deal’ to bring the Japanese defender to north London.

Defence is an area that Tottenham have struggled with recently, with Spurs insider Alasdair Gold claiming that defence will be the club’s priority this summer.

And speaking about the pursuit to Matt Hayes on his YouTube channel, Romano claimed that the two teams were indeed close, noting that the 22-year-old has somewhat limited his options moving forward and has his eyes purely focused on a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium:

“For sure, there are negotiations – this is 100% confirmed as I’ve said many times, there is a bid from Tottenham around €18m, add-ons included. Bologna want around €20m or €25m, so there is still a gap between the two clubs.

“They’re talking, Tomiyasu wants to join Tottenham, it’s the only option for him because at the moment, Arsenal are not in the race – the only option in Premier League, I mean, because there is also Atalanta here in Italy who want Tomiyasu, but his priority is now Tottenham.”

Could Takehiro Tomiyasu make a good signing for Spurs?

This really is a positive update from Romano, mainly because it appears as though the two sides aren’t too far apart when it comes to their respective valuations, so it should be possible for them to find a happy medium somewhere along the line, a gap that even Daniel Levy will probably find easy enough to bridge.

And the fact that they are close means that hopefully he can start with them at the earliest opportunity once his stint at the Olympic Games is over, because if defence is the club’s priority this summer, then the earlier they can get him involved, the better chance they will have to get off to a good start this season.

Crucially, it seems the defender’s own desires are setting Tottenham apart in terms of winning the race for his signature, so based on this latest update, it looks like a matter of time before the Japan international arrives in north London.
