Football journalist Duncan Castles has been sharing some insight into Tottenham Hotspur’s reported transfer interest in Bologna centre-back Takehiro Tomiyasu.

This comes after Castles co-hosted a recent episode of The Transfer Window Podcast where he spoke about a variety of different transfer-related talking points.

On the subject of Tottenham’s reported interest in Tomiyasu, Castles had this to say on the matter.

He said: “They’ve made an offer for Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu, who’s currently at Bologna.

“Interestingly, I understand that Atalanta are also pushing hard to sign him, which is I think a good sign given the way that Atalanta have recruited and performed in Italian and European football recently.

“[I] understand the initial offer is €15 million, plus bonuses, he’s a player who can play at centre-back and right-back, so I think a sensible recruit given that Serge Aurier, as ever, wants out of Tottenham, is signalling he wants out of Tottenham.”

Tomiyasu signed to Bologna back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Belgian club Sint-Truiden for a fee of £6.3 million, as per Transfermarkt.

Since then, the 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £18 million according to Transfermarkt, has made 63 appearances for Bologna across all competitions, in which he has managed to score three goals and provide three assists along the way.

TIF Thoughts on Duncan Castles’ comments on Tottenham’s transfer interest in Tomiyasu…

Given how Tomiyasu ended the 2020/21 Serie A season as one of Bologna’s highest-rated players with an overall season rating of 6.77/10 according to WhoScored, it’s understandable, in our view, why Spurs have reportedly shown an interest in signing the defender this summer.

However, it seems Atalanta’s interest could throw a spanner into the works, and if that escalates any further, Spurs could be faced with having to address their defensive issues – thought to be a priority this summer – with a second-rate target, at best.

Would this be a good signing for Spurs?

As Castles mentioned, there have been reports claiming that Serge Aurier has expressed his intention to leave the north London club this summer.

Also, with reports linking current Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, perhaps the club could sign Tomiyasu as a long-term replacement if the Belgian were to leave north London.
