Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has been speaking on his latest YouTube video to discuss all things related to the north London club.

One topic of discussion was the future of their Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld amid speculation surrounding his future in N17.

Should Spurs sell Alderweireld this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

It has been reported that the 32-year-old has told the north London club he would like to leave this summer with a move back to his homeland his preferred destination.

Alderweireld has been a Tottenham player since 2015 after making the move from Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of £11.5m. Discussing the Belgian’s future in north London, Gold had the following to say on the matter.

“Yeah, he wants to head off. I think the feeling is he’d like to go back to Belgium preferably or the Netherlands, obviously where he used to be.

“I think Antwerp would love to have him back. But the big thing with Toby is that is the money side of things. He’s got, I think two years left on his deal that he signed not long after [Jose] Mourinho came in. The biggest issue is going to be [his wage]. I don’t think Spurs will hold out for a huge fee.

And the bigger thing as well for Alderweireld is that I think he’s one of the club’s higher earners. I think he earns a six-figure sum a week. Belgian clubs and pretty much probably most Eredivisie clubs, if not all, won’t be able to afford that.”

TIF Thoughts on Alderweireld’s future…

Alderweireld has been a superb servant for Spurs in his six years at the Lilywhites having racked up 236 appearances for the north London club (via Transfermarkt).

However, with two years remaining on his current deal, this summer seems like their last chance to actually get a decent sum of money in before his age begins to seriously decrease his value.

If Alderweireld is to leave this summer, it would leave Eric Dier as their most experienced defender. In our opinion, Spurs would have to bring in an experienced starting centre-back to fill the void Alderweireld would leave.
