Newcastle United fans have been reacting to news about the future of defender Florian Lejeune following comments by Steve Bruce.

Speaking after the club’s 1-0 defeat to York City in a pre-season friendly over the weekend, Bruce confirmed that the French defender was in the midst of making a move to La Liga side Alaves, where he spent last season on loan:

“Florian is on his way to Spain. It looks as if something is going to happen there. It will put a few quid in the coffers. He is going back to Alaves where he was on loan and there is something imminent.”

The 30-year-old hasn’t had the best of times at the club under Bruce, only making nine appearances during a spell that was incredibly hampered by injuries, but it looks as if his time away at Alaves last season wasn’t enough to convince the Newcastle United head coach to keep him as part of his plans for the club.

Newcastle's all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Alan Shearer but how many goals did he score for the club?

The news was relayed to fans on social media by journalist Lee Ryder, and it’s fair to say that plenty of fans weren’t happy with the decision to let him leave, with some turning on Bruce for his apparent lack of faith in him:

“This is crazy honestly he’s been great every game he’s played. #nufc will let another quality player go. He’s only defender that can spray ball around pitch.”

“What a stupid deal! Literally our best defender”
“Bruce just wants Centre-Halves who play the game like he did. Wasn’t he watching The Euros? Doesn’t he realise that football has changed over the last 30 years? That you now need footballing Centre-Halves who are comfortable on the ball…”
“State of our club Bruce will probably try and bring in Phil Jones on loan and say he’s improving the squad.”
“Steve Bruce summed up”
“Absolutely ridiculous but not surprised”
“Shocking decision this!”

Is Newcastle's squad weaker than it was last season?

Hopefully there’s a decent replacement lined up by the club, otherwise things could get even worse with the supporters.
