Newcastle United fans on Twitter have been responding to the latest piece of transfer news to emerge concerning the Tyneside club.

This comes after Newcastle-focused Twitter account @NUFC360 shared a post relaying news originally published in a report from 90Min.

Newcastle's all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Alan Shearer but how many goals did he score for the club?

The report claims that Newcastle coach Graeme Jones is “a big fan of” out-of-contract Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy and that the chance to link up with Jones at St. James’ Park is a “huge lure” for the player, who is thought to be reportedly awaiting an approach from Palace following the expiration of his deal at Selhurst Park.

This post then gathered a lot of replies from Toon supporters, who were not shy in sharing their thoughts on this latest claim.

So, what did these Newcastle fans have to say in response to this claim about Jones and McCarthy?

This club is an embarrassment but apparently you’re protecting us @premierleague

@LiamNUFC98

“Please no.”

@IxCartyxI

“Unbelievable mate”

@KevMC86

“Hendrick 2.0, at least he will be injured most of the time”

@Somuchdamnsauce

“Just no”

@TalkNUFC1

Don’t even go there! #NUFC

@WeAreTheMags84

I’d rather Hendrick, our club is rotten to the core #nufc

@holst24

Looking at the replies to this post, it’s quite apparent that these Newcastle fans would not like to see McCarthy make a move to St. James’ Park this summer regardless of Jones’ reported admiration for the midfield man.

Would you like to see Newcastle sign James McCarthy this summer?

Yes

Yes

No

No

In our view, given how McCarthy only managed to earn himself a rather disappointing overall season rating of 6.29/10 for his performances in the Premier League last season, making him one of Palace’s lowest-rated players according to WhoScored, it’s easy to see why these Toon fans don’t want to see him in Newcastle shirt.

Also, with McCarthy having such a substantial injury history, perhaps the club should look at bringing in someone with more quality that can be a reliable figure in Steve Bruce’s squad rather than make up the numbers on the cheap.
