Murphy’s new contract came after he had attracted interest from Rangers and Watford and the fact that he’s signed a six-year deal shows the faith that the club has in him.
The 26-year-old played 26 times in the Premier League last season and he only started 17 games, but he managed to directly contribute to five goals for the Magpies (as per WhoScored).
Only eight players at the club grabbed a higher WhoScored rating than Murphy. This suggests that he’s a quality player for the team and perhaps he should be playing more next season.
