Journalist Samuel Luckhurst has recently talked about Manchester United’s chase of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

It has been reported that Real Madrid have now accepted that Varane is going to move on this summer and Man United are expected to make an offer in the coming days.

United have almost reached a contractual agreement with the defender and discussions are open between the Red Devils and Los Blancos.

Luckhurst appeared on the latest episode of the Manchester is Red podcast, where he spoke about Varane and United. The journalist believes that the transfer fee is not going to be an issue for United and Real can’t demand a huge fee for the defender.

Will Varane be a good partner for Maguire?

He stated: “Varane is the obvious one, the one they’re working on at the moment. I was told by people who are involved in it that they’d be stunned if Varane doesn’t end up at United.

“I don’t think transfer fee is going to be an issue. The specific transfer fee still hasn’t been disclosed, that might be a little closer to the time.

“But effectively, the way it has been described is that they’ll be getting him at a good price. It’ll be nowhere near the £80 million that Madrid were idealistically, not holding out for, but valuing him at. That was just pure posturing. There are going to be very few players who’ll go for that money.”

TIF Thoughts on Varane…

Varane is already vastly experienced at club and international level, having won the World Cup and winning the Champions League multiple times. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United are yet to win a single trophy even though they’ve reached a final and multiple semi-finals. So Varane’s experience can certainly help them make the step up.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

Victor Lindelof has come in for criticism recently, so perhaps they need an upgrade on the Swede. So having Varane at the club will be a boost in terms of quality and in terms of the experience of winning trophies.
