Neil Jones delivered an update on what the future holds for Xherdan Shaqiri on the latest episode of Goal’s Shop Window Transfer Show.

Shaqiri has been linked with a move away from Liverpool and the Premier League, with interest emerging from Serie A in the form of Lazio and Napoli.

The Switzerland international has been with Liverpool for three seasons now, winning both the Premier League and Champions League, however, during those three seasons, he has only been able to make 18 Premier League starts, despite being a regular at Stoke City.

Shaqiri’s future was discussed by Jones and he explained what it may look like.

“He’s a very good sub because he comes on, he’s got lovely technique, he handles the ball well, he’s got a final pass, he can shoot, obviously, he’s got a good set-piece delivery.

“But I think he’s 29 now, he’s pretty much been a sub for Liverpool for three years. When he goes away at the Euros, you see he’s always the main man for Switzerland, he’s their all-time record scorer in the tournament; I think he fancies a bit of that at club level as well.”

How many goals has Mohamed Salah scored in all competitions this season?

With the winger now 29 years old and not having started more than five league games since the 2018/19 season, Shaqiri may now see it as the perfect time to leave Liverpool, especially if someone like Harvey Elliott is going to be kept around the first time to get minutes and experience.

Shaqiri has sometimes been deployed in the centre of midfield as well as out wide, but with young talents emerging such as Curtis Jones, Jurgen Klopp may struggle to guarantee the Switzerland international anything more than cup appearances, even when he is fit.
