Journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently revealed the latest about Liverpool’s interest in Lille midfielder Renato Sanches.

Romano recently appeared in the latest video on the Anfield Watch YouTube channel and spoke about various issues involving Liverpool and their potential transfers this summer. He also talked about Sanches and the Portuguese midfielder’s links with a move to Merseyside.

It was recently reported that the Reds are close to signing Sanches from Lille, as they are thought to be closing in on a £30m signing. Liverpool were said to be eyeing a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, and Sanches could apparently be that player.

Do you see Liverpool signing Sanches?

No

However, Romano stated that this is not the case, although the Reds do like Sanches and have scouted him in the past.

The journalist stated: “I remember in our interview in January, I told you about Renato Sanches, I think there was never any news about Renato Sanches before. I’m happy that now we have the rumours back for Renato because he’s always been on the list for Liverpool, they’ve been always appreciating him since he was playing in Benfica, then he moved to Bayern, Swansea – so yeah, a lot of experience now at Lille.

“So they’ve been always scouting him and they’ve been always interested in Renato. Before signing this kind of player, it takes time. You have to find an agreement with the player, with the club; it’s not an easy one. Also his agent, Jorge Mendes – he’s not an easy one. So it’s not an easy negotiation. I see around [news] they’re saying that it’s a done deal or something like this.

“From what I know – it’s not a done deal and it’s not yet at advanced stages. Because what I’ve been told is that the strategy for Liverpool now is not going immediately for a midfielder. So they don’t see anything to go immediately for their new Wijnaldum to replace Wijnaldum. But they think they want to wait.”

TIF Thoughts on Sanches to Liverpool…

As per FBRef, Sanches is statistically similar to Florian Neuhaus and Curtis Jones. Neuhaus is himself a recent Liverpool target and Jones has been described as a future Wijnaldum replacement as well.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

It shows that Sanches perhaps belongs to a similar profile as the new Paris Saint-Germain star. He’s still only 23 and he recently had a decent season for Lille, helping them win the Ligue 1 title.

It suggests that he’s certainly a quality player and because of his age, he might still improve in the future, so signing Sanches could be a sensible move for the Reds.
