Leeds United podcaster Joe Wainman has said that he ‘fully expects’ the imminent arrival of Junior Firpo from Barcelona, after it was reported that the defender is in England ahead of his proposed €15 million (£12.8m) move from the Catalan club.

It has been widely reported that the left-back position is one that Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds are looking to strengthen this summer and it seems as though they have identified their target in Firpo, who has been made available by Barcelona, as the side are ridden with debt and are hoping to reduce their wage bill this summer.

Wainman, speaking on his YouTube channel, claimed he is ‘really excited’ as he awaits the completion of the deal…

“I’m really excited about this one. As I say, I fully expect Junior Firpo to be announced in the next coming days. It was reported yesterday from The Athletic and a number of news sources that he is now in England.

“I actually feel a bit sorry for him because the weather is shocking, coming all the way from sunny Spain to England and he gets to sample the rain in and around Leeds but yeah, he’s in England, obviously ahead of his €15m move to Leeds United, it actually works out to be about £12.8m.

“It’s crazy stuff, because I genuinely think this guy is going to be absolutely amazing under the tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa and if you throw in the hat with got him for £12.8m; Raphinha for £17m; Bamford, £7m rising to £10m; Jack Harrison, £11m; it’s just crazy business by Victor Orta and he’s pulled another rabbit out of the hat.”

TIF thoughts on Firpo to Leeds…

Firpo’s Barcelona career has never really got started, though at a reported £12.8 million could end up being a real steal if he succeeds at Elland Road, especially seeing as the Spaniard is still just 24 years of age.

Firpo would be joining the club following the departure of North Macedonian Ezgjan Alioski, who departed the club on a free transfer following the end of his contract after four years at the club.

The 24-year-old moved to Barcelona in 2019 from Real Betis for a fee of just over £16 million but has only played 41 times in all competitions for the club since joining and looks set to join Leeds in the coming days.
