Leeds United journalist Conor McGilligan has expressed his concern over certain aspects of a reported move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

A report from Football.london has claimed that Leeds United, along with Crystal Palace, are showing an interest in signing the 21-year-old this summer to bring him in on loan. The midfielder has spent the last three seasons out on loan at Charlton Athletic and Swansea City in the Championship and then West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.

However, speaking on a Q&A for the Leeds Live Facebook page, McGilligan raised some concerns about what could happen if the club are only able to sign him on a temporary deal:

“That’s the problem with it, isn’t it, in terms of what we’ve seen so far. Are Leeds going to be able to get him for the long term?

“You look at this Bielsa system and it’s a unit, isn’t it? It’s a collective, it’s a cohesive sort of compartment which goes forward and destructs teams and everybody knows the patterns of play.

“And I think if we’re only able to get him for a year, if we’re only able to get him for 12 months, is Conor Gallagher properly going to buy into it?”

Can you remember where Leeds finished in these league seasons? First up: 2018/19

It certainly is a concern, especially seeing as Leeds have been down this road before with the problems they faced when they tried to sign Ben White from Brighton last year after his loan spell at the club. But there’s only really one way to find out and that’s to at least try to begin with.

Much in the same way they managed to turn three separate loan spells for Jack Harrison into a permanent one in the end, if they at least have the starting point sorted and can get him in the door, they can deal with what is to come down the road when the time is right for it to be dealt with.

But they should try to get as much out of him as they can whilst they have the chance, and if there’s enough progression there to make it look like he has a future, then try and make something happen.
