Leeds United journalist Beren Cross has provided an update when it comes to Kalvin Phillips ahead of the new season.

Leeds were recently held to a 1-1 draw with Championship side Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, with Pascal Struijk on the scoresheet for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

The game acted as an opportunity to try out some new players, with summer signing Junior Firpo getting his first runout with the first team.

Missing from the team last night though was the 25-year-old Phillips, who is still being given some time off following his summer where he played the majority of the minutes to help England reach the final of the European Championship.

Will Kalvin Phillips be a one-club man?

Speaking about Phillips during a Facebook Live video after the game, Cross provided an update on the midfielder’s return to action, hinting that he should be back with the team pretty soon and will more than likely see some action in their remaining pre-season games:

“Kalvin, it’s obvious of course, only finished with England on July 11th. So he obviously is back in training now and will need a bit of time. I wonder if he might well get some minutes in the Betis game, but if not, then almost certainly he should play the game against Ajax, I would think.”

Can you remember where Leeds finished in these league seasons? First up: 2018/19

Phillips is someone that Leeds need to be extra careful with given how important he is to how the Leeds team plays, so they can’t afford to have him rushed back and risk getting injured because of a lack of rest due to the summer that he went through, especially when you factor in the workload that Bielsa demands of them.

And with such a tough opening game for them at Manchester United on the horizon, he is going to be vital to them if they are to start the season on the right foot and build on what was a fantastic first season back in the Premier League.
