Talk of Dominic Calvert-Lewin joining Real Madrid this summer is “a strange one”, says former Everton defender Michael Ball.

After a stunning season, where he was able to score 16 Premier League goals, and Carlo Ancelotti’s return to Real Madrid, the 24-year-old striker is now being linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

According to one report last month, the Spanish giants are weighing up a £50m bid as Ancelotti eyes a reunion with his former player.

Can you see DCL ending up at Real Madrid?

Ball, however, has questioned these rumours and is unsure whether Calvert-Lewin would even be able to break into Real Madrid’s starting XI.

“I’ve seen the rumours about DCL and Carlo. I don’t know whether that’s lazy journalism,” the ex-Everton full-back exclusively told TIF.

“DCL’s improved under Duncan Ferguson, under Carlo Ancelotti, and he’s got himself in the England fold. Is he good enough right now to break into the Real squad? I don’t think he is.

“So, yeah, it’s a strange one.”

In Karim Benzema, Real Madrid have one of the leading No.9s in the world. The 33-year-old was absolutely devastating for France in the Euros, scoring four goals in as many appearances before his country’s elimination at the hands of Switzerland.

Trying to oust that looks like mission impossible for a player like Calvert-Lewin, who is just starting to become a prolific centre-forward, so it is hard to see how this deal makes sense for either party.
