James Milner could return to one of his former clubs before the transfer window slams shut, according to Dean Windass.

Milner has become a utility player at Liverpool, with him covering at left-back on numerous occasions and featuring across the midfield.

The former England international made 36 appearances last season, but just 19 of those came from the start.

Where would James Milner get more game time?

Milner has enjoyed a trophy-laden career, having won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup since joining Liverpool six years ago. The 35-year-old also got his hands on five pieces of silverware during his Manchester City days, before contract negotiations broke down.

But Windass believes Milner may be tempted to leave Anfield in favour of a fairytale ending to his career at former employers Leeds United or Aston Villa.

Windass feels a return to Villa Park would be perfect if Milner is eager to get more minutes on the pitch this season.

Speaking exclusively to TIF, Windass said: “I think the only thing that will determine whether James goes is whether he is going to play.

“He is a fit lad, looks after himself and is teetotal. I just think that he will want to go somewhere that he is going to play.

Who has made the most appearances in Liverpool's club history?

“I think he would play more at Villa than at Leeds. That conversation will come between him and the manager. Jurgen Klopp will probably say he will be a bit-part player. Dean Smith would tell him he’d be playing every week.

“He’ll make that decision and it won’t be about money. It would be about whether he wants to carry on playing for the next two years.”
