Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield is expecting Manchester City to up the ante by submitting a formal bid for Jack Grealish within the next 14 days.

City chief Pep Guardiola has made no secret of his admiration for the Aston Villa talisman since he took charge at the Etihad Stadium and Grealish is on the Premier League champions’ wishlist.

Reports suggest City were waiting until after Grealish’s involvement in Euro 2020 came to an end before firming up their interest and they are preparing to test Villa’s resolve with a £100million offer. If accepted, that would break the British transfer record.

However, Villa are not in a position where they need to sell their creative midfielder as Grealish has four years remaining on his £120,000-per-week contract.

Dean Smith’s side are looking to ward off City’s interest by offering Grealish an improved deal this summer, but Hatfield thinks Guardiola will make his move imminently.

Jack Grealish quiz: First up, how old is the Villa captain?

Speaking exclusively to TIF, Hatfield said: “If City are going to bid, I would expect them to do so in the next week or two.

“Equally, if Villa are going to get him tied down to a new contract, I would expect that to be in a week or two as well.

“It’s a Mexican stand-off at the minute, with Grealish in the middle. Do Villa offer him a contract or do City come in with a bid first?”
