River Plate forward Julian Alvarez is the sort of signing Aston Villa fans would get behind, says Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Villa have been linked with a move for Alvarez, 21, with reports coming out of Argentina suggesting that the Midlands club are keen on doing a deal this summer.

Last season, first-choice striker Ollie Watkins did a superb job leading the line, scoring 16 goals in all competitions for the Villans.

However, the 25-year-old did not have much cover, with Wesley missing most of the campaign due to injury.

His future at the club is now uncertain. Back in May, Football Insider reported that Villa were looking to offload the player, while The Athletic claims Keinan Davis could also be heading for the exit door this summer.

It means manager Dean Smith could indeed dip into the market to sign a new forward, and Hatfield believes Alvarez would make a lot of sense.

I think he would kind of suit Villa,” Hatfield told TIF. “He’s young, an attacking player. They do want to bolster there.

“He’d be a back-up striker if he signed, but he can also play wide and in attacking areas elsewhere.

“It’s an exciting signing. I think fans would be really behind it.”

Ultimately, with both Wesley and Davis possibly leaving the club, the Villans could definitely do with another forward coming in.
