This is a transfer window which could define Joe Willock’s career and the right move may result in an England call-up, according to Steve Howey.

Willock ended last season strongly, becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive Premier League games since Alan Shearer.

That rich vein of form came during a fruitful loan spell at Newcastle United, where he scored eight goals in 14 appearances since the February switch.

Could Joe Willock earn an England call-up within the next year?

Willock has returned to Arsenal following the temporary move and Gunners chief Mikel Arteta has confirmed the midfielder is in his plans.

That has not stopped rumours that Willock could be set to leave the Emirates Stadium, with Newcastle boss Steve Bruce keen to negotiate another loan deal.

Willock is reportedly hoping to return to St James’ Park after enjoying his time in the north-east.

Former Magpies defender Howey says the 21-year-old should have his sights set on earning a maiden call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England side.

In what month did Mikel Arteta take over as the Arsenal boss?

Speaking exclusively to TIF, Howey said: “Gareth is loyal to his players but he’s also a believer of picking players on current form.

“If he is banging the goals in like he did at Newcastle, then he has every chance of being in the squad, absolutely.

“If he is playing better than the other lads in the England squad, you want the national team to do well and you play the players who are playing really well.”
