Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told This Is Futbol that his old side signing Alex Mowatt from Barnsley was “great business”.

Mowatt joins West Brom to reunite with manager Valerien Ismael after deciding not to extend his contract at Oakwell.

The 26-year-old was a regular for the Frenchman, appearing over 50 times in all competitions last season.

It makes the decision to bring Mowatt to The Hawthorns make complete sense, and Palmer has since hailed him as a “fantastic signing”.

“It’s good business. It’s great business,” the ex-West Brom star exclusively told TIF. “I know that Barnsley were going to make him the highest-paid player in their history to stay.

“That’s a fantastic signing for the football club, it really is.”

Ismael will undoubtedly be looking for Mowatt to bring an attacking threat to his new midfield.

In the 2020/21 Championship campaign, the Englishman managed to score eight goals and set up another seven.

Ultimately, the decision to bring him in, and on a free transfer, was probably a no-brainer.

The Baggies, however, are still likely to go into the new season with a lesser squad, with star players Matheus Pereira and Sam Johnstone both expected to leave before the end of the transfer window.
