Brian Deane has backed Slavisa Jokanovic to guide Sheffield United back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Jokanovic was appointed as the Blades’ new manager, on a three-year deal, in May.

The Serbian has already won promotion with Watford and Fulham during his Championship managerial career and Sheffield United will be hoping he is set to enjoy success in the second tier of English football for a third time.

Chris Wilder left the Bramall Lane hotseat in March and was replaced on an interim basis by ex-Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom.

However, the Blades’ poor form continued as they finished bottom of the Premier League standings, bringing the curtain down on a two-year spell back in the top flight.

Sheffield United’s aim will be to follow in the footsteps of Norwich City and Watford, who secured an immediate return to the Premier League last season.

Deane, who had three spells at Bramall Lane, feels Jokanovic is the right man for the job.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

Speaking exclusively to TIF, he said: “I think it’s going to be difficult but they’ve got a realistic chance.

“Jokanovic has got a proven track record in the division for getting teams promoted. I think if they can keep the squad together, by and large, and improve on it, then it’s definitely possible.”
