Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield says he would be surprised to see John McGinn leave Aston Villa this summer.

Liverpool have taken a keen interest in the central midfielder, who played every minute of Scotland’s Euro 2020 campaign.

McGinn joined Villa from Scottish side Hibernian in 2018 and has gone on to become a fan favourite.

The 26-year-old has gone on to make 111 appearances for Dean Smith’s side, contributing 13 goals and 19 assists.

Liverpool, who lost their Premier League crown to Manchester City in what was a disappointing season for the red half of Merseyside, are looking to bolster their midfield after seeing Georginio Wijnaldum depart this summer.

Netherlands captain Wijnaldum rejected Liverpool’s offer of a new contract midway through last season and, following the expiry of his deal, has joined French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Hatfield does not expect Liverpool to meet Villa’s £50million price tag for McGinn and is certain he will remain in Villa colours next season.

Speaking to TIF, Hatfield said: “I highly doubt he will go for that kind of money purely because I don’t think another club would be willing to shell out that kind of fee.

“If they do, then Villa will suddenly have a serious question to answer because it would be a massive resell. It would be an interesting situation if a club did put in that kind of bid but, for Villa, he’s vitally important.”
