Portsmouth fans have been reacting on Twitter after it was announced that Ben Close has joined Doncaster Rovers.

Pompey fans commented in response to a series of tweets by the midfielder himself, who thanked the club and supporters.

“Sad to see you go, Ben. Was hoping the Cowleys would be right up your street. I fully expect you to fulfil your potential at Donny and obviously score a worldie at Fratton next season!”

“Absolutely gutted. Good luck for the future. You will be welcomed back with open arms on your return to Fratton Park even if it is for an opposing team xx”

“The fact the club put you in this situation is a mistake in my eyes. Young promising talent that we let go on a free to none other than a rival. Best of luck Ben, hope you rise to the talent that the faithful know you have.”

“Feels strange to see you and jack go, but in all fairness it’s probably for the best. You’ve both done so well, and i think a fresh challenge is what you both need. All the best to you in your future apart from playing us! One of our own”

“Real shame to see you go. Wish you every success.”

From the responses to Close’s tweet, it’s easy to see that Portsmouth fans are disappointed with his departure from his boyhood club, where he made 190 appearances.

The 24-year-old departs Fratton Park after coming through the academy at Pompey and making his first-team debut for the club as a 43rd-minute substitute against Yeovil in 2014.

After spending seven years at the club, Close departs Pompey having been offered a two-year deal on reduced terms with his contract expiring at the end of June.

In joining Doncaster, Close becomes the club’s first signing under new manager Richie Wellens, who joined the club in May.

Ben Close had a WhoScored rating of 6.43/10 in League One and scored one in 22 appearances for Pompey this season. His departure is a “mistake” according to one Pompey fan, but only time will tell if they come to regret his sale.
