Celtic hero John Hartson has criticised the club for their decision-making involving Kristoffer Ajer.

While Ajer has been linked with a move to the likes of Newcastle United and newly-promoted Premier League side Norwich City, the Norwegian’s contract at Parkhead runs out in the summer of 2022.

Hartson appeared on the latest episode of the Go Radio Football Show and the panel talked about numerous issues involving the Hoops, including Ajer’s situation and his future at Celtic.

Is it Celtic's fault that Ajer may leave?

He believes that Ajer’s contractual situation is ‘Celtic’s own wrongdoing’ because they allowed the defender’s contract to run down.

He said: “I’ve heard somebody say the other week that he’s been wanting to leave in terms of he’s had a sniff of a few clubs, his agent would’ve been getting on to him. It’d be a big shame.

“It’s Celtic’s own wrongdoing. Because how come they’ve let his contract run down to a year? If the boy just blatantly refuses to sign a new deal, there’s not an awful lot you can do.”

TIF Thoughts on Ajer’s future…

It was back in the first few months of 2020 that Ajer’s agent had made it clear that he won’t sign a new deal with the club. While he stated that the Norwegian would leave last summer, he also claimed that many clubs were interested in him.

The defender ended up changing his agents and the interest from Milan was there last summer, too. Considering that Ajer seemed to be against the idea of renewing his deal over a year ago, perhaps Celtic aren’t at fault in this case.
