On the latest episode of The Molineux View podcast, Wolves journalist Tim Spiers has been discussing potential summer transfer moves.

One particular player which Spiers spoke about was the Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio, amid rumours linking him with a possible switch to Roma.

Should Wolves sell Rui Patricio this summer?

Patricio has played an integral role in Wolves’ side since he signed in 2018 from Porto in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £16.2m (via Transfermarkt).

It has been reported new Roma manager Jose Mourinho is looking to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, with Pau Lopez and Antonio Mirante failing to impress.

Discussing where Patricio’s future with the Wanderers lies, Spiers had the following to say on the matter.

“Rui Patricio is a strange one. I’ve heard varied accounts of what’s going on there – from being told it was a done deal that he’s going to Roma a couple of weeks ago, to that now being off and him potentially staying at the club. And if Roma don’t meet their asking price, they’re more than happy to keep him.

“So there’s agents at play there, and I’m not sure Patricio would be particularly desperate to leave, but if Roma do come in with a decent fee, he’s at the age now where his value would dwindle every year.”

TIF Thoughts on Patricio’s future…

Patricio has now made 127 appearances for Wolves and played in all but one of their games in the 2020/21 Premier League season – so he would certainly be a big miss.

However, he is now 33 years old and his value is likely to depreciate as he gets older as Spiers suggests – so this could be an opportunity for Wolves to create some transfer funds for Bruno Lage this summer.

Patricio is valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, but could Wolves realistically replace him with a goalkeeper of equal quality for that sum of money?
