Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has featured on Matt Hayes’ YouTube channel to discuss Tottenham Hotspur’s ongoing search for a new manager.

One name which has been linked with the vacant Tottenham manager role is that of current Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.

Ever since Jose Mourinho was sacked, the Dutch manager was one of the names heavily linked with potentially becoming the next manager at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, Spurs were dealt somewhat of a blow with Ten Hag in April when the Eredivisie side extended his contractual stay in Amsterdam by an extra year.

Discussing the 51-year-old’s chances of departing Ajax this summer for Spurs, Romano had the following to say.

“He’s one of the managers they appreciate, for sure, because he’s always been appreciated. But what I’m told is that in the first meeting, the only meeting they had with Ten Hag, it was like one month ago, a bit less than one month ago.

“In this moment, they had some problem with Ten Hag. So it was not the best meeting they had and that’s why Ten Hag, two days later, he had the meeting with [the] Ajax board and decided to extend the contract.

“So now coming back on Ten Hag as an option, in my opinion, it’s not so easy. Also because Ajax are convinced that he’s staying and he’s going to respect his word and his contract with Ajax.

TIF Thoughts on Ten Hag to Spurs…

It does not sound good for any Spurs fans who were hoping Ten Hag would become their next manager going by what Romano had to say.

We think on paper, Ten Hag would have made a great fit for Spurs. He has shown during his time in Amsterdam he is able to deliver on a shoestring budget (via Transfermarkt).

However, this does not seem to be the case, with meetings between the two parties said not to have gone amazingly which is what Romano’s believes made Ten Hag commit to Ajax’s new deal.

From what Romano had to say, it would suggest Ten Hag to Spurs is unlikely.
