Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting to the performance of defender Joe Rodon during Wales’ game against Italy at Euro 2020.

The 23-year-old didn’t have the greatest of first seasons in north London, as not only was he omitted from the team’s Europa League squad, but he also struggled to break into the team in the Premier League as well.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

But despite not being first-choice for his club, he has been first-choice for his country during these championships, playing every minute of their first three games as Wales qualified for the last 16 of the competition, playing a huge part in getting them there. He has so far averaged 1.3 blocks, 5.7 clearances, 1.3 interceptions and winning 2.7 aerial duels per game for Robert Page’s men (as per WhoScored).

These defensive abilities stood out in their defeat against Italy, where Rodon did his utmost to keep the Italian attack at bay, earning himself a 7.03 WhoScored rating – the highest for Wales on the day – and that left many Spurs fans online wondering why he didn’t play more this past season and demanding that he gets given more playing time in 2021/22:

“I tweet it and I’ll tweet it again – Joe Rodon has been so impressive for Wales in the Euros. Criminal he didn’t play more games for Spurs last season.”

“Another solid performance from Joe Rodon, would be more than happy for him to have a starting place next season.”
“Joe Rodon has to start for us next season”
“Seen a lot of plaudits for Joe Rodon today and it always seems the case whenever he plays for Wales. If given the same trust and opportunities for Spurs, I’m sure he would deliver equally fine performances for us. He has to be given a proper run next season”
“Joe Rodon has to be first-choice next season, yes he’s young and will make mistakes along the way but let him play and learn from them. Looks like he could be tremendous for us”
“Rodon was unbelievable in that game!!! He won everything in the air and on the floor. He must have more game time for Spurs next season.”
“Rodon has been outstanding today”
“Rodon insane again”
