Former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer expects Gareth Bale to remain at Real Madrid instead of returning to Tottenham following Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment as Los Blancos manager.

Bale spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Tottenham and finished the campaign with some very good numbers.

The 31-year-old scored 16 goals in all competitions, with 11 of those coming in the Premier League, so it would be no surprise if Spurs wanted to keep him beyond June.

However, Ancelotti, who worked with Bale during his previous spell at Real Madrid, has hinted at the Welsh forward still having a future in the Spanish capital. And Palmer is expecting just that, believing he could even sign a new contract.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Gareth Bale goes back and plays and signs a new contract at Real Madrid. He likes it out there.

“Ancelotti’s probably spoken to his agent and spoken to Gareth and assured him that he’s got a future back at the football club. Like I said, I’d be very surprised if Gareth doesn’t sign an extension to his contract there under Ancelotti.”

Bale only has a year remaining on his contract, so a lot is still up in the air. But given the success the Wales international and Ancelotti have shared together, winning the Champions League and Copa del Rey back in 2014, the former Everton boss may indeed want to keep him.
