Former Premier League centre-back Steve Howey believes that Leonardo Bonucci would be an excellent signing for Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Spurs have been linked with a swoop to sign the centre-back following the appointment of Fabio Paratici as the club’s managing director of football.

Bonucci is 34 and is a vastly experienced figure, having made a total of 442 appearances for Juventus, and also won 105 caps for Italy, for whom he is shining at the 2020 European Championships right now with two clean sheets from two.

He has won Serie A no fewer than nine times, and has also won the Italian Cup four times, and the Italian Super Cup five times.

It remains to be seen if Spurs do follow through with a potential swoop, as he does not exactly fit the profile of players the club have looked for in recent years, given his age.

Still, Howey believes that he is an immense defender and would be an exceptional signing for the club, given that he has the ability to slot into the side even with his advanced years.

Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, he said: “He’s very, very good and I think as a defender, even at 34, fair enough, you might have somebody you’re coming up against that’s very quick but when you’ve got the amount of experience that he’s got, you can get away with it.”
