Former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer has told This Is Futbol in an exclusive interview that his old side signing Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers for £8m would be a bargain.

Southampton are thought to be interested in the striker, with the MailOnline reporting they could sign him for as little as £8m.

Armstrong is out of contract next summer and will undoubtedly deal Tony Mowbray’s side a huge blow if he leaves in 2022 or before then.

Would you like to see Armstrong at Southampton?

Absolutely!

Absolutely!

Too much of a gamble

Too much of a gamble

Last season, the 24-year-old was in devastating form in the Championship, scoring 28 goals in 40 appearances.

On the reports that Southampton could sign Armstrong for £8m, Palmer said:

“£8m is a bargain and his wages aren’t going to be astronomical. I wouldn’t have thought he’s on 20-25 grand a week. I wouldn’t have thought he’s anywhere near that.

“It will be a good deal for somebody, a really good deal for somebody.”

The Championship to the Premier League is, of course, quite the step up. Is Armstrong capable of the replicating the sort of form he showed last term in the top flight? That remains to be seen.

Given that goal record, though, and for only £8m, the Englishman is surely worth a punt for any Premier League side currently looking for a new striker.
