Former Norwich City star Jon Newsome has expressed his surprise as Emiliano Buendia looks set to join Aston Villa imminently, as per The Telegraph’s John Percy.

Buendia enjoyed a fantastic season at Carrow Road as the Canaries won promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship.

Norwich ultimately won the title by six points from second-placed Watford, with Buendia scoring 15 goals and registering 17 assists in 39 games in the second-tier.

As a result, Norwich looked to face a fight to keep hold of the 24-year-old, although they may have been more confident of keeping him having returned to the Premier League.

Goal reported that Buendia would cost interested parties such as Villa and Arsenal £40m in the summer market, and with that fee expected to be even lower, Newsome has been having his say on the sale.

Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, Newsome said: “It didn’t look like Norwich would need to sell financially.

“They’ve gained promotion to the Premier League, they’ve got a pot of money dropping in, the way that they have utilised their finances and not thrown money around willy nilly, even when they were up in the Premier League the last time. They’re cautious with the amount of money they are going to spend so they’re not going to spend money they haven’t got.”

Buendia has made a total of 121 appearances for Norwich, scoring 24 goals and laying on 43 assists; he has been called up to the senior Argentina squad but has yet to win his first official cap.
