Newcastle United fans have been reacting to comments made by Noel Whelan that they should sign Patrick van Aanholt this summer.

Newcastle’s transfer window plans are somewhat up in the air right now because of the takeover, with journalist Mark Douglas stating recently on the Everything is Black and White Podcast that most transfer decisions, such as how much they are likely to be able to spend, will be decided until after owner Mike Ashley has gone through arbitration with the Premier League over the status of the deal.

Starting with a relatively recent player. Who is this?

However, one decision that wouldn’t take much out of the budget would be the free transfer of Van Aanholt, who was recently released by Crystal Palace. Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, Whelan thinks that Newcastle should be looking at picking him up:

“Look at Van Aanholt. I’m sure he could do a job at Newcastle. He’s someone who can add that quality and experience. Newcastle have to be clever in the transfer market and look at players who are out of contract.

“Maybe a two-year contract for some players, Van Aanholt would be one for me. They have to look at him. He played very well for Holland the other night, there are gems out there if you look for them.”

His comments were relayed to fans by the Newcastle United – Chronicle Facebook page, where there were plenty of fans who agreed with Whelan that they should be looking at him:

Would this be a good signing for Newcastle?

It looks like these fans are willing to forgive the fact that he’s an ex-Sunderland player, which might be a sign of how good he could be for them if they’re willing to overlook that.
