Mike Ashley has long wanted to be out of Newcastle United and for even longer he has not wanted to put more money into the club than necessary just to keep the Magpies afloat, and finance expert Kieran Maguire can’t see that changing.

In recent weeks the Sports Direct tycoon has seen the Sunday Times publish their UK rich list and Ashley himself has seen his wealth increase by a staggering £769 million, despite the last 12 months being plagued by a global pandemic.

Will Newcastle have new owners next season?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Nothing typifies Ashley’s tenure more than seeing the owner’s wealth increase by such a vast amount, only for him to hand Steve Bruce a reported transfer budget of just £10 million for next season.

The Magpies only managed to avoid being embroiled in a relegation battle last season because of Allan Saint-Maximin and Joe Willock’s late-season form, which saw the latter win May’s player of the month award, and Maguire can’t see Ashley changing his handling of the club anytime soon, as he spoke exclusively to This is Futbol:

I think it’s highly unlikely that Mike Ashley will spend money on Newcastle and as far as he’s concerned, the club is in the Premier League and has been now for four years without spending a lot of money.”

A nice easy one to start off with. Who scored Newcastle's opening goal of the 2020/21 PL season?

Bruce has had a relatively good experience in the transfer market since being appointed back in 2019 having seen the club spend £100million over four transfer windows as well as bringing in some top quality players such as Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson.

Newcastle fans and Bruce himself will know that they must strengthen next season if they wish to avoid yet another relegation battle, but with just £10 million to spend there may have to be some players leaving the club before fans see some new arrivals.
