Liam Kennedy has been speaking on a recent edition of NUFC Matters about Newcastle United’s pursuit of Kristoffer Ajer.
The Toon were reported to have pretty much sealed the signing of the 23-year-old from Celtic for £6m (Sunday Mirror via HITC), but claims then emerged which suggested that Bayer Leverkusen wanted to sign Ajer as well.
The Shields Gazette reporter seems to believe that the Toon do face competition, but still thinks Newcastle will sign the Norwegian international.
He said: “There are a lot of clubs watching him as well. A lot of clubs on the continent, and Newcastle United, haven’t got a lot of money this summer, and that’s the problem.
“If you’re hassling about little bits of money here and there, you’re always at risk of somebody coming in and saying, ‘look, we’ll give you that extra £500k, we’ll give you an extra £1m.’
“I wouldn’t rule it out; I would say he’s one at this stage that I think is more likely to walk through the door than not.”
Do you think Ajer will join Newcastle?
Yes, it will happen
No, he will go somewhere else
TIF Thoughts on Ajer…
Newcastle seem to have been confident of signing Ajer, and Kennedy sounds pretty confident about their chances of signing him, but if Leverkusen come in for the Celtic man, things could presumably get a bit tricky, especially with the Bundesliga club in European competition.
The best thing the Toon can do is try and complete this deal as quickly as possible when the transfer window opens on 9th June.
