Journalist Samuel Luckhurst has recently talked about the future of Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot.

Luckhurst appeared on the latest episode of the Manchester Is Red podcast and he talked about potential outgoings from Manchester United this summer. One player that he focused on was Dalot and he stated that while he’s been told to return to United, things could change in August.

Dalot spent that 2020/21 campaign on loan at Milan and has made an appearance for the Portuguese national team at Euro 2020.

The defender joined United in the summer of 2018 but failed to nail down a regular starting place for himself at Old Trafford.

Luckhurst talked about Dalot’s situation, saying: “You’ve got someone like Diogo Dalot, who for now has been told to come back to United. I was told that they want to keep him, but the caveat to that is that something could happen in August.

“Because I don’t think you’d really see Kieran Trippier or another right-back coming in anytime soon. Clubs will haggle over a fee, these things are always long-drawn-out processes. So you could still easily see Dalot going back to AC Milan or going to another club in August.”

TIF Thoughts on Dalot…

22-year-old Dalot had played quite regularly for Milan in the 2020/21 campaign, playing over 2,000 minutes and even directly contributing to five goals for the side in all competitions. It suggests that he’s at the very least a quality player and can play at a European level.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over Leeds United at Anfield in September?

United have been linked with a move for Kieran Trippier but Atletico Madrid are demanding a pretty high fee for him. It is a clear reflection that the club wants a new right-back.

So if the Trippier deal doesn’t work out, keeping Dalot and giving him a chance would make sense for United as a backup plan.
