Journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently provided an update about the situation of Raphael Varane, amidst Manchester United’s interest in the Frenchman.

It has been reported that Varane is United’s top centre-back target this summer and is seen an alternative too. The Frenchman, it has been stated, wants to join the Old Trafford-based club.

Romano talked about Varane’s future when he appeared on the latest episode of the StrettyCast podcast. He stated that Varane indeed is looking for a new challenge in his career and the Premier League could well be his next destination.

Will Varane be a good partner for Maguire?

The journalist also stated that United see Varane as an opportunity for this summer. He claimed: “For sure, Varane is one of the players that they like. He could be an opportunity, it depends on what Real Madrid want to do.

“Because at the moment, they hope to convince Varane to stay and to offer him a new contract. But the player wants to try something different. He won everything with Real Madrid, he won the World Cup with France. So he wants a new challenge and I think Premier League could be one of the opportunities.”

TIF Thoughts on Varane to United…

Varane, who is valued at £63 million (as per Transfermarkt), is only 28 and he’s won numerous trophies for club and country, which is a reflection of his ability as a player.

Who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 4-3 win over United at Anfield in September?

Axel Tuanzebe is expected to be loaned out by United this summer and this would leave the club with only three solid centre-back options – Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly – with Phil Jones having faced various injury issues. Varane would add depth and quality to the backline if his past achievements are anything to go by.

So if the Frenchman wants the move and he could be available for an affordable fee, it would make sense for United to sign him.
