ESPN’s Manchester United correspondent Rob Dawson has revealed that United have a huge problem on their hands as the prospect of losing Paul Pogba on a free transfer next summer becomes more and more likely with each passing day.

Pogba has a year left on his current Manchester United deal, however, it’s been rumoured that the Frenchman isn’t overly keen on signing a new deal at Old Trafford, meaning that their club-record signing could walk out the door on a free transfer next summer, just six years after United smashed the bank to re-sign him.

Dawson revealed that United will hold talks with Pogba and his camp once the Frenchman returns from this summer’s European Championships, in the hope of resolving what he has labelled a “huge, huge problem”.

Speaking to Manchester United Muppetiers‘ YouTube channel, Dawson had this update to give on Pogba’s situation:

“In terms of Pogba’s contract, it’s an issue for United, a huge issue. He’s their record signing who cost 90 million pounds, and he’s a year away from leaving for free, which would be embarrassing, frankly, given what happened with him before when he actually went to Juventus the first time.

“What I would say is that even when Mino Raiola was talking before Christmas about Pogba not signing a contract at Old Trafford, United never said that. United privately never gave up hope that he would eventually sign. And that stance is the same now as it was then, that if the opportunity presents itself, then yeah, of course, they would look to extend, they think there is still a chance that he will do that.

“The last that we were told is that the United would look to talk to him at some stage this summer, probably not in the middle of the Euros, but at some stage this summer, just to see where he’s at and to see whether it’s a possibility, because the minute that he’s in the last year of his contract, it causes a huge, huge problem.”

TIF Thoughts on Paul Pogba leaving Manchester United on a free transfer…

During his time at Manchester United, Pogba has been a player that has massively divided opinion. However, regardless of an individual’s thoughts on the World Cup winner, if United were to allow him to leave next summer on a free transfer, as Dawson says, it would be a disaster.

Currently valued at £54million by Transfermarkt, Pogba’s loss on a free transfer would be a huge financial hit especially when United are being poised to spend big on the likes of Jadon Sancho, and in a pandemic environment where United could perhaps do with recouping some of their outlays in the transfer window.

Pogba may not have pleased everyone since re-joining United in 2016, however, he has directly contributed to 80 goals in that time, a stat that is rather impressive for a player in his position.
