Liverpool journalist Paul Gorst has been sharing his thoughts on Reds right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and the possibility of him signing a new deal at the Merseyside club.

This comes after Gorst made an appearance on a recent episode of the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast where he spoke about a variety of topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

On the subject of Alexander-Arnold and the possibility of him putting pen to paper on a new contract at Anfield, Gorst had this to say on the matter.

He said: “Trent really picked up his form in the last two or three months of the season.

“He’s only 22; for me, he’s one of the best right-backs in Europe, playing for his boyhood club.

“It’d be a no brainer to tie him down for another five or six years because he’s got designs on being one day a Liverpool captain as well.

“So, I think it would be great to watch him kind of flourish over the next few years with that new contract and, maybe one day, become a captain of this football club.”

As a product of Liverpool’s youth academy, Alexander-Arnold made his senior debut for the Reds back in October 2016.

Since then, the 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £67.5 million, has made a total of 179 appearances for Liverpool in which he has managed to score 10 goals and provide 44 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Paul Gorst’s comments on Alexander-Arnold…

That only Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah played more minutes in the Premier League this past season than Alexander-Arnold just goes to show how important he is for Klopp and his team, which probably doesn’t make it surprising that Gorst has been talking about the club potentially offering him a new deal as well the defender’s future in such glowing terms.

Do you think Alexander-Arnold will be Liverpool's captain in the future?

No

In our view, given how he has worked his way through the youth ranks at the club and is now a crucial member of the team, it would be great to see Alexander-Arnold pledge his future with Liverpool by signing a new deal and wearing the captain’s armband, though those hopes may appear to hang in the balance while his future is not tied down.
