Liverpool journalist Joe Rimmer has been sharing his thoughts on the possibility of the Merseyside club making a move to sign Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer.

This comes after Rimmer made an appearance on a recent episode of the Liverpool Echo’s Blood Red Podcast, where he spoke about a range of topics concerning Jurgen Klopp’s side.

First up in this Mo Salah quiz, what is his current squad number for Liverpool?

On the subject of Tielemans, who has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks, Rimmer had this to say on the possibility of Liverpool signing the Belgian this summer.

He said: “I really like Youri Tielemans. I think he’s full of energy, he’s young, he’s got space to improve, he’s confident, he’s bold, he scores goals, doesn’t he?

“There’s a lot to like about him, but I think when you’re trying to do business with a Premier League rival, there’s going to be an extra fee on top of that, and Leicester have done well in recent years, so they’re not going to want to let go of a player on the cheap, so, to me, that makes Liverpool’s life quite difficult.”

Leicester originally signed Tielemans on a loan deal from French club AS Monaco back in the 2019 January transfer window before securing him on a permanent deal in the following summer window for a fee of £40 million.

Overall, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £49.5 million, has made 108 appearances for the Foxes across all competitions in which he has managed to score 17 goals and provide 19 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts on Joe Rimmer’s comments on a potential Liverpool move for Youri Tielemans…

Given how Liverpool have recently said goodbye to Georginio Wijnaldum, who has recently joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, it’s easy to see why the club have been linked with Tielemans as a potential replacement for the Dutchman.

Would Youri Tielemans be a suitable replacement for Wijnaldum?

Yes

Yes

No

No

With Tielemans playing more minutes in the Premier League this season than any other outfield Leicester player, this just shows how much of an important figure he is in Brendan Rodgers’ squad and how reluctant they could be in potentially allowing him to leave for another club this summer.

In our view, if Leicester were to put a rather large price tag on Tielemans this summer to ward off any potential clubs such as Liverpool that may want to take the Belgian off their hands this summer, perhaps the Reds should consider paying whatever fee Leicester ask for because his age and the experience he already has of playing in the Premier League could make him a solid long-term replacement for Wijnaldum.

Therefore, Leicester could be placed in a no-lose situation – which places the onus on Liverpool to make a big decision should they further their reported interest.
