Leeds United podcaster Joe Wainman has expressed his concern over the future of Gjanni Alioski as he approaches the final few days of his contract.

The North Macedonian’s contract officially expires on 30th June, at which point his four-year stay at the club will come to an end having first arrived in the summer of 2017. The club have offered him a new contract, but with Turkish outlet Sabah reporting that both Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce have shown an interest in signing him on a free transfer, his future at Elland Road is still not confirmed.

And that’s why, speaking on his YouTube channel, Wainman expressed his concern over a lack of action from both sides in the matter, and stressed how important it is that the 29-year-old stays at the club beyond the summer:

“I hope he stays; I really want him to stay. I don’t want us to have to go search for another left-back, or use Leif Davis there, although maybe he’ll come on. But if you have Alioski, he can play anywhere down that left-hand side, he’s well versed in the Bielsa methods.

“Maybe he’s holding out for a bit more cash from Leeds, I’m just not sure. But I want him to stay at the football club. But as I say, time’s running out and hopefully we’ll hear from him very, very soon.”

Are you confident Alioski will sign a new deal at Leeds?

Wainman is right to talk about Alioski and his familiarity in the Marcelo Bielsa system, perhaps most notably his training methods.

And whilst his production has dipped slightly in the time he’s been with Bielsa, with both the number of games and the quality of opposition playing their part, it might be more beneficial to get one more year out of someone you know can play the system, and easing someone else in, like the aforementioned Davis or a new signing, to take his place gradually over time.

Sometimes it’s a case of better the devil you know, and Alioski is certainly that for Leeds.
