Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has told This Is Futbol that it is not risky for Leeds United to splash the cash this summer.

Leeds have not been a Premier League club for long but are already being linked with players who could cost big money.

Hertha Berlin’s Matheus Cunha and Udinese’s Rodrigo de Paul, both rumoured targets, both could cost £35m each.

Following their own promotion to the Premier League, Sheffield United spent big on the likes of Oli McBurnie and Rhian Brewster, players who have not quite met expectations and could now prove hard to move on for the same money.

It could leave the Blades stuck with big-money signings on Premier League wages playing in the Championship. Even so, Maguire does not think it is a risk for Leeds to follow suit.

“If you want to compete, it’s a very expensive business, football,” The Price of Football author said. “I don’t think it’s that risky. Sheffield United had an exceptional first season, but I think a lot of people got the impression that it will be difficult to repeat.

“I think if Leeds didn’t buy anybody this summer, they’d still have a half decent season next year. So therefore spending money on players will be seen as helping the club to push on, especially with San Francisco 49ers behind them.”

It will now be interesting to see if Leeds go all out for Cunha, De Paul or perhaps even both. Whatever happens, fans will surely be pleased with the ambition the club is showing.
