Journalist Dean Jones has talked about how Crystal Palace failed to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers star Adama Traore earlier this summer.
Jones talked about Palace when he appeared on the latest episode of The Football Terrace’s The Done Deal Show and one topic of discussion around the Eagles was former managerial target Nuno Espirito Santo and how he wanted Traore at the club.
While Espirito Santo is now close to being appointed as the Tottenham manager, the Portuguese was initially in talks with Palace, but talks later ended and the deal collapsed because of the finances surrounding the deal.
The journalist stated that Nuno wanted the Spaniard to be signed before he joined Palace, but the south London-based club wanted to appoint the manager before doing anything else.
Would it have made sense for Palace to sign Adama Traore?
Yes
No
He stated: “He [Nuno] also wanted to take Adama Traore to Crystal Palace, and Crystal Palace were basically told by him, ‘do that deal and then I’ll join’. And they’re like, ‘no, we want you, we don’t want Adama Traore first, let’s get you and then we’ll do that’. And he’s like, ‘no, do it the other way around’ and they’re like ‘no’.”
TIF Thoughts on Adama Traore’s failed move to Palace…
It seems bizarre, but by the sounds of it, Palace’s failure to sign Traore was perhaps a reason why they couldn’t hire Nuno and they’re now close to appointing ex-Nice manager Patrick Vieira.
It was previously reported that Wolves wanted a fee of over £40 million, if they were to sell Traore this summer. Palace’s transfer record stands at £27 million, which suggests that they’d have had to break their record considerably to sign the Spanish winger for Nuno.
The club has multiple contracts running out this summer and shelling out big money on one player may not have made too much sense.
