Arsenal journalist Charles Watts has recently issued an update about the future of the club’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Leno’s current deal at Arsenal runs out in the summer of 2023, but it has been reported that many at the club expect the German to leave this summer. Meanwhile, Andre Onana has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Watts talked about multiple incomings and outgoings at the club when he appeared in the latest video on his YouTube channel. One player that he spoke about was Leno as he delivered the latest on his future.

He claimed that Leno won’t push for an Arsenal exit and he’s only looking for any potential options that come up for him. The journalist also stated that the German and his wife are happy in London.

He stated: “I haven’t heard that Leno is trying to push his way out of the club or anything like that. He’s just open to exploring the possibilities.

“He’s happy in London, I’ve heard his wife is happy in London – Sophie, she loves it here. I’m not expecting that Leno is really going to demand a move this summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Leno’s future…

Onana’s doping case is still under review and if his ban is upheld, the Ajax man will be suspended for a while yet. It will ensure that Arsenal would need a goalkeeper to play regularly between the sticks even if he is signed as an eventual Leno replacement.

Leno has been the club’s regular first-choice goalkeeper over the last few seasons, so it would be a big call from Arsenal to replace the German in goal. While uncertainty reigns over the immediate future of Onana, Arsenal would surely only focus on keeping the current No 1 at the club given that Alex Runarsson is the only other alternative at this stage as Mat Ryan’s loan comes to an end.

The links with Onana may suggest Leno’s own future isn’t as clear as Watts is making out, though his comments suggest that it would be a situation purely of Arsenal’s own making if the shot-stopper is indeed happy in north London.
