Leeds United journalist Mark Smith has been discussing the possibility of the club signing Lyon’s Maxwel Cornet this summer.

Journalist Alan Nixon tweeted out a claim over the weekend stating that Leeds were looking into the possibility of signing the 24-year-old, with the French side reportedly wanting £20m for his services as Leeds look to build on what was a fantastic first season back in the Premier League in 2020/21.

Can you remember where Leeds finished in these league seasons? First up: 2018/19

And speaking on a video for the Football Insider Facebook page, Smith felt that he would be a great addition to this current side, but that there was probably still some way to go before a deal like this could be possible:

“On paper, he looks like the perfect player, really. A lot like [Ezgjan] Alioski when he first came in, he came in as that left-winger. A bit of unknown – obviously Cornet’s a lot more known, he scored against Manchester City in that Champions League win over them a couple of years back.

“He’s scored and grabbed assists against PSG this season and for £20m, for a player who two years ago was linked with a move to Chelsea, it could be seen as a bargain.

“But reading into those reports, it seems as though Leeds want it to be even lower, so maybe closer to the £15m mark; if they can get it down to that, I don’t think there’ll be any question that he’ll be at Elland Road this summer, even for £20m I don’t think you can argue with that.”

Will Leeds get this deal done?

The Ivorian is an incredibly versatile player who can play at left-back or on either wing, so would certainly be a great asset to Marcelo Bielsa who has expressed his love for versatile players like Stuart Dallas.

And with 51 goals and 29 assists for Lyon, he has certainly proved himself to be something of a force in the attacking third.

If they can bring him in for something in the region of £15m-£20m and he is able to replicate his Ligue 1 form in the Premier League, then it could go down as one of the steals of the summer if they are able to pull it off.
