La Liga expert Euan McTear has been left confused by reports linking Leeds United with a potential swoop for Huesca full-back Javi Galan.

Reports have suggested that the Whites have targeted a left-back this summer and Galan is seen as a potential option.

A report in Spain has claimed that Galan is closing in on the move to Elland Road as Marcelo Bielsa looks to strengthen a squad that finished in the top-half of the Premier League table in 2020/21.

Do you think Leeds can finish in the top six next season?

Yes

No

No

The Spaniard is 26 and impressed for Huesca this season, playing in all but one of their La Liga games, despite their relegation from La Liga.

Indeed, Huesca finished two points behind Elche, drawing their final game as Elche won, and have fallen into the second-tier.

McTear believes that Galan is a fine player who can continuously create chances for his side, but he believes that his signing would have to result in a systemic change for Leeds, given that he is most adept at playing as a left wing-back.

Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, McTear said: “He’s another one who played as a left wing-back most of last season which is why it’s a bit weird, the Leeds link.

“The first half of last season, when he was at Huesca, he played as a left-back in a back four, they changed coach pretty much exactly halfway through the season. The new coach put in a back three system, Galan was one of the wing-backs.

“He had some really good performances there going forward, his numbers weren’t great, one goal and two assists, but that is more about the quality of attackers he was playing with at Huesca than anything he did. He did really well, he created lots of chances, but he created those chances when he was a left wing-back. When he was a left-back, maybe he wasn’t quite so effective so, again, that’s why I find the Leeds link a bit strange.

“A back three as a wing back was what suited him best.”
