Former Leeds defender Jon Newsome believes Marcelo Bielsa needs to strengthen his goalkeeping department and reckons Kiko Casilla should be sold this summer.

The ex-Real Madrid shot shopper was Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper until being handed an eight-match suspension in February 2020 for an incident at Charlton six months earlier – losing his place in the side to Illan Meslier.

And the young Frenchman has kept his place in the team this season, starting all but three of the 38 Premier League matches, with Casilla only playing the final two games to go with his top-flight debut against Brighton back in January.

The £40,000 per-week Spaniard still has more than two years remaining on his Elland Road contract, but with the club already on the look out for another goalkeeper, he appears to be coming towards the end of his time in Yorkshire.

Leeds' all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Mark Viduka but how many did he score?

And having been given just 540 minutes across all competitions, which included a run out for Leeds U23s in the EFL Trophy, Newsome thinks that Biesla should be looking at moving on the 34-year-old goalkeeper.

He told This is Futbol:

“I’m led to believe he’s probably one of the highest paid players at the club.

“You don’t want your number two goalkeeper one of the highest paid players at the club, and I would be surprised if he’s still here at the start of pre-season.

“It’s definitely an area that the club need to strengthen, because we need some back-up now.”
