The Athletic’s James Maw has been speaking on their latest edition of The View from The Lane podcast to discuss all things Tottenham Hotspur following their victory over Sheffield United.

One topic of discussion was Tottenham’s ongoing search for a new permanent manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last month.

Would you like Gerrard as Spurs manager?

No, we can be doing better

No, we can be doing better

Yes, he is just what we need

Yes, he is just what we need

Maw highlighted one name which he believes should at least be in the running for the permanent role with the north London club, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

The former Liverpool ace has guided Rangers to their first Scottish crown since 2011 and denied bitter rivals Celtic of winning their 10th consecutive title.

Although Maw believes Gerrard has done a good enough job with the Gers to warrant being considered for the Spurs job, he was also aware of the possible issues that may cause for a potential return to Anfield.

He said: “Gerrard probably should be in that conversation, shouldn’t he? I mean, he’s done like a reasonably good job. I guess for someone like that he might because he’s obviously desperate to manage Liverpool. Presumably, Spurs may be kind of at the level where it makes it difficult to then manage Liverpool? Maybe. “If you do a good job at Spurs and then you’re in a Champions League and then suddenly do how do you kind of then hop over to manage a Liverpool, kind of feels like that might be slightly awkward.

“There’s not too many sort of managerial switches between big clubs in England are there?”

Spurs have had quite a few odd players over the years, but can you remember them? Here is the first one, who is this former Tottenham man?

TIF Thoughts on Maw’s comments…

According to reports, Daniel Levy is looking for a young manager who can provide an attacking influence on the Spurs side.

Given Julian Nagelsmann and Erik ten Hag are now both off the table then surely Gerrard should at least be considered as a potential option?

Gerrard has guided Rangers back to the top of Scottish football and dethroned their city rivals, however, as Maw mentioned it could prove detrimental to his ambitions to become Liverpool manager if he was to join Spurs.

Should he join Spurs and prove not to be a success then surely it would put his dream move back to Anfield under question and would Gerrard be willing to put that potential homecoming at risk?
