Tom Walsh has been speaking on the latest installment of the Wise Men Say podcast, where he disclosed how Ross Stewart impressed him over the weekend.

The on-loan striker bagged his first League One goal of the season against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday as Lee Johnson’s side came away with all three points.

It was Sunderland’s first victory since April 2, ending a seven-game winless run in the third tier, which had ended their automatic promotion hopes.

Now though, their focus has turned to the playoffs, and with top goalscorer Charlie Wyke out injured, Stewart grasped his opportunity to shine, impressing Walsh with his performance.

He said: (3:53) “Yeah, he was very good. Very, I was quite impressed by him, quite, I don’t want to say surprised because it sounds patronising, but that goal, it’s a fantastic goal.

“When he went through on goal, I had no confidence he was going to tuck it away but tuck it away he did. I thought he’d taken one touch too many and the keeper narrowed it, but he sure showed me.”

TIF Thoughts on Sunderland’s playoff hopes…

Sunderland face Northampton Town on the final day of the campaign with their place in the League One playoffs already secure.

Johnson’s men will be keen to build some momentum going into the final few games of the season by recording bak-to-back victories, and Stewart’s recent performance should give them hope of doing just that.

Wyke has bagged an incredible 25 league goals this season, and if he fails to recover from injury in time for the playoffs, Sunderland’s hopes may hinge on the 24-year-old Stewart.
