Sheffield Wednesday journalist and podcaster James Marriott has been sharing his thoughts on the recent club statement shared by Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri after the Yorkshire club were recently relegated to League One after their 3-3 draw against Derby County.

This comes after Marriott co-hosted a recent episode of Wednesday-themed podcast Singing The Blues where he spoke about a range of topics concerning the club, including their recent relegation.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on the 2020 summer transfer window in the EFL, which player left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund?

On the subject of Chansiri’s statement that was posted by the club’s official Twitter account, Marriott had this to say on the matter. (7.39)

He said: “We said a few weeks ago that the second the full-time whistle goes we need to see a statement from the club.

“It wasn’t at the second, it was a few hours later, maybe that was the right thing just let the dust settle a little bit and to be fair, I think he got it right by starting that with an apology, but we need actions now, we don’t need statements.

“I agree that keeping the manager is the right decision, but now we need to see things change and we need to see things change quickly because the summer is not a time for licking our wounds. The summer now is a time of saying ‘right, this project has failed, now we start Sheffield Wednesday 2.0 and start rebuilding it.’

“Forget everything that’s happened in the past, learn from those mistakes, show us that you’ve learned from those mistakes and start putting things right.”

Throughout the season, Wednesday only managed to win 12 out of their 46 league games, drawing 11 and losing 23 along the way, resulting in the club ending the 2020/21 season bottom of the table with 41 points (per BBC Sport).

TIF Thoughts on Marriott’s comments about Chansiri’s statement…

Given Wednesday’s disaster of a season, it seems right that Chansiri has come out and apologised to the fans for what they have seen from their club throughout this latest campaign, which has now ended with their relegation to League One.

Are you confident Wednesday will be promoted back to the Championship next season?

With Wednesday having gone through this latest season with a points deduction, financial issues and numerous permanent and interim coaches in charge of the team, it’s safe to say it hasn’t been easy for the club, team or fans in recent months.

In our view, the best thing Chansiri can do now would be to work over the summer to make sure the Owls have the best possible chance to get through next season and ultimately regain their place in the Championship by the end of it.
