Sheffield Wednesday podcaster James Marriott has been sharing his thoughts on Owls defender Tom Lees, his time at the Yorkshire side and his future with the club.

This comes after Marriott co-hosted a recent episode of Wednesday-themed podcast Singing The Blues where he spoke about a variety of subjects concerning Darren Moore’s side.

An easy one to kick off our quiz on the 2020 summer transfer window in the EFL, which player left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund?

On the subject of Lees, who suffered an ankle injury during the club’s recent match against Middlesbrough that saw him get stretchered off the pitch, Marriott had this to say about the player.

He said: “Where I stand on Tom Lees is that he has been a good servant to the club and he’s been there through the good times, and obviously he’s been there through the bad times, and I think it is time for him to move on.

“I think it is time for us to rebuild what has been generally quite an inadequate defence in the last few years, certainly an up-and-down, topsy-turvy defence. It’s not been a reliable defence for Wednesday, and it is time for us to make some changes and it is time for Tom Lees to move on.

“But absolute total respect to Tom Lees for the service he has given to Wednesday, and I don’t want to see his Wednesday career end the way that it seemingly has done because you don’t wish that on any player and that’s a real shame.”

Wednesday signed Lees back in the 2014 summer transfer window from Leeds United for an undisclosed fee.

TIF Thoughts on James Marriott’s comments on Lees…

Since joining the club, the 30-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.98 million, has made 274 appearances for the Owls in which he has managed to score 10 goals and provide eight assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

Given how long Lees has been at the club and their current predicament in the league, it’s understandable that Marriott has some concerns that this latest injury the defender has suffered could end things in miserable fashion, which hopefully will not be the case.

Do you think Tom Lees time at Wednesday is over?

Also, taking into account how Lees has played in all of Wednesday’s previous league games since late November, he would surely be a big miss for the team moving forward at the heart of their defence.
