TalkSport pundit Simon Jordan doesn’t think that the proposed takeover of Derby County would be in jeopardy if the club were to get relegated.
Derby face a ‘winner take all’ game against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, with the loser consigned to relegation to League One. All this is happening whilst the club is in the process of being taken over with Mel Morris selling the club to Spaniard Erik Alonso, something that is being reported in some outlets as potentially being under threat.
However speaking on TalkSport (0:11 & 1:17), Jordan thinks that relegation from the Championship won’t have that much of an effect on the potential takeover, other than perhaps what Alonso would have to ultimately pay for it:
“I wouldn’t have thought so [the takeover being called off], he might try and chip the price from Mel, because ultimately he’s buying a different product.
“I don’t think it stops the purchase. I just think it takes potentially one of two great former Premier League clubs down to the third tier of English football.”

With Jordan having been the owner of Crystal Palace, a team that faced their own ‘winner take all’ game against Sheffield Wednesday back in 2010, although after he had relinquished ownership of the club, he does have a lot of authority and knowledge the sort of impact relegation could have on the future of a club.
And in the end this could ultimately provide some benefit to the club, because any money that is taken off the initial bid could then theoretically be used on funding the summer transfer window to try and get back in the Championship if indeed that happens. Although you’d suspect that Derby fans would rather stay in the Championship rather than having to go through that process.
